    Skiing Information and Preferences

Please answer all questions in this section unless they are marked as "Optional." Your answers will help to determine your qualifications to be a guide, and once you are accepted they will help SFL to make appropriate skier/guide matches. We make every attempt to pair skiers and guides who share similar goals and interests. Generally, first-time guides are paired with visually-impaired skiers who have previously attended SFL, first-time visually-impaired skiers are paired with experienced SFL guides, and all mobility-impaired skiers are paired with experienced guides. It is essential that each guide be a skilled classic cross-country skier, able to manage his/her own speed and direction on both level ground and hills while at the same time guiding and communicating with his/her skiing partner.

    31. What is your current level of classic (striding, rather than skate skiing) cross-country skiing ability?
Beginner - Little or no classic cross-country skiing experienceNovice - A basic grasp of technique and balance, not yet sure-footed at medium speedIntermediate - Good classic technique and balance: gliding, diagonal stride, basic double poling. Can safely climb and descend moderately steep hills. May still fall occasionally, mainly at high speedAdvanced - Very good classic technique and balance: gliding, striding, double poling, balance, stopping and turning at moderate to high speeds. Can safely climb and descend nearly all levels of hills. Seldom fall.Expert - Excellent classic technique and balance: gliding, striding, double poling, balance, stopping and turning at high speeds. Can safely climb and descend all levels of hills, including steep hills. Rarely fall.

    32. Briefly describe your cross-country skiing and guiding experience:

    33. (Optional) Ski times: To help us better match skiers and guides, if you have this information available, please briefly list a typical time for you to ski 5 kilometers and/or 10 kilometers. Please note if the time is while racing or skiing recreationally, guiding another skier or skiing on your own.

    34. Briefly describe your recent activity to maintain your physical fitness. Include what activities, how often, distance and/or duration.

We will attempt to honor your request as to the type of participant with whom you would like to be matched, as indicated below. (Choose one from each group.)

    35. Gender Preference

    36. Experience Preference

    37. 5k or 10k Skier Preference

    38. Disability Preference

    39. Since SFL is both an instructional program for beginning visually- and mobility-impaired skiers, and an opportunity for more advanced skiers to hone their skill level and technique, the range of skier goals for the week will be quite broad. Taking into consideration your own personal preferences, health, and physical condition, IF IT IS POSSIBLE, which type of skier would you prefer?

    40. (Optional) Please briefly provide any additional or clarifying comments about the type of skier with whom you would like to ski, such as a description of your ideal day of guiding/skiing with your ski partner at SFL.

    41. How important to you is teaching ski technique to your skiing partner?

    42. In some years there are more guides than visually- or mobility-impaired skiers at the event. If this is the case this year, what would be your preferred guiding assignment?

    43. In some years there are more visually- and mobility-impaired skiers than guides at the event. This can happen as the result of last-minute cancellations or illnesses, but is not usually the case. It has happened only once in the last ten years. If this is the situation this year, what would be your preferred guiding assignment? If you are paired with two skiers, you would alternate which skier you were guiding at any given time. You would never be asked to guide more than one skier at the same time.

    44. Will you need rental cross-country ski equipment? Cross-country skis, poles and boots will be available for rental from the Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center at a cost of $110 for the six-day week.

    45. If you will need rental cross-country ski boots during the week, what shoe size do you wear?

    46. If you will need rental cross-country ski boots during the week and have indicated above the shoe size that you wear, is that size a U.S. male size, a U.S. female size, a U.K. size, or a European size?
